Nettspend’s BAD ASS FCKING KID*
In an era where rap is constantly evolving, Nettspend, a 17-year-old artist from Richmond, Virginia, has entered the scene with unapologetic energy and an unpredictable approach. His debut album, BAD ASS FCKING KID* (BAFK), is a bold introduction to his world, showcasing a chaotic yet oddly captivating blend of Gen Z angst, humor, and style. Love it or hate it, Nettspend is making it clear that he’s here to shake things up.
His self-proclaimed “jerk” style is one of the defining characteristics of BAFK. This isn’t the nostalgic California jerk movement of the 2010s. This is something far more overstimulated. Tracks like "Tyla" and "A$AP" perfectly encapsulate his unfiltered approach, where lyrics feel like they’re coming straight from his stream of consciousness. His free-associative wordplay results in him creating songs that feel like conversations you’d overhear at a party and later try to piece together. It’s messy, but somehow, it works.
The standout track, “Beach Leak,” produced by esteemed producer Evilgiane, shows another side of Nettspend. Here, he describes himself as “Future, but Gen Z,” a comparison that might feel audacious until you hear the depth of his vulnerability on the track. The beats carry a moody, melodic vibe, allowing Nettspend to weave between brash confidence and moments of self-reflection. It’s these glimpses of emotional honesty that ground the album and give it a sense of depth beyond the chaos.
BAFK isn’t a project that fits neatly into any existing mold. Critics have noted the album’s divisive qualities, with some praising its relentless energy and others critiquing its lack of focus. Nettspend’s approach to rap feels intentionally offbeat, both literally and figuratively, with lines that sometimes feel disconnected yet tied together by his sheer momentum. Pitchfork described his delivery as “amusingly disjointed,” highlighting his ability to pull listeners into his whirlwind of sound and energy.
But it’s not all frenzy and randomness. Nettspend has an ear for production that elevates his flows, even when they feel on the verge of spiraling out of control. His selection is top tier, and the ones that he chooses to work with all seem to carry an edge that feels almost experimental, yet still accessible enough to keep listeners coming back. The cohesion, or lack thereof, is part of the charm, leaving you wondering where he’ll take you next.
As with any debut, BAFK has been met with mixed reviews. Fans have latched onto Nettspend’s originality and energy, while some critics have questioned the cohesiveness of the project. Pitchfork highlighted his “manic flow” and melodic instincts, while others argue that his unconventional style might not resonate with everyone. But that’s part of what makes Nettspend stand out. He’s not trying to please everyone. He’s here to disrupt, experiment, and create a lane entirely his own.
Despite the polarized reception, one thing is undeniable: Nettspend has captured attention. In a crowded musical landscape, BAFK cuts through the noise, offering something that feels truly differentl. Nettspend isn’t trying to polish his rough edges, he’s using them as part of the artistry, creating an album that’s as raw as it is honest. BAD ASS FCKING KID* is a debut that sure is messy, but at the end of the day it remains unapologetically Nettspend. Love it or hate it, you’ll remember it, and that’s exactly the point.
