Mac Miller Reminds Us All Why We Fell In Love With His Music
I am not sure why this is the case, but I think that I can speak on behalf of a lot of longtime Mac fans when I say that this project came at the right time. On January 17, 2025, the world celebrated what would have been Mac Miller’s 33rd birthday with the release of Balloonerism, a long-shelved gem from his discography. Originally recorded in 2014, this 14-track album offers a window into Mac's more experimental phase (which at the time was met with harsh criticism), showcasing a blend of jazz, neo-soul, and psychedelic hip-hop. Many of the tracks have been floating around the internet for nearly a decade, yet it still feels as relevant as ever. A project rooted in creativity and curiosity, it feels both nostalgic and forward-thinking—a hallmark of Mac’s artistic range.
With tracks like the wistful “Excelsior,” the album establishes its reflective tone, as Mac muses, “What ever happened to apple juice and cartwheels?” Tracks like “5 Dollar Pony Rides” highlight his knack for blending quirky storytelling with smooth, soulful melodies. This song, with its playful lyrics and scatting outro, reflects the lighter, carefree side of Mac’s creative process.
The production on Balloonerism elevates it to a dreamlike experience, with Thundercat’s contributions adding depth and texture to several tracks. On “Friendly Hallucinations,” the bass lines ripple beneath Mac’s vocals, while “Stoned” reveals his talents as a drummer, seamlessly integrating live instrumentation with wide-ranging soundscapes. The experimental elements are intentional yet organic, showcasing an artist that we all know was unafraid to take risks.
Collaborations are sparse, making each one just that much more impactful. SZA lends her voice to “DJ’s Chord Organ,” bringing a soft, atmospheric quality to an already hypnotic track. Meanwhile, Mac’s Delusional Thomas alter ego makes a surprise appearance on “Transformations,” injecting a distorted, haunting vibe into the mix. These features complement the album’s eclectic energy without overshadowing its cohesive vision.
Throughout Balloonerism, Miller weaves themes of childhood nostalgia, self-awareness, and fleeting happiness. Tracks like “Rick’s Piano” are infused with subtle humor, balancing the more serious undertones. He doesn’t shy away from exploring existential questions but keeps the mood light enough to avoid being weighed down by it. It’s this delicate balancing act that makes the album such a compelling listen. However, those very existential questions, the idea of the fragility of life, and the fact that Mac was so understanding of it all, makes this album an even more difficult pill to swallow now knowing how things have played out.
The release of Balloonerism has immediately been embraced warmly by fans and critics alike. While some tracks lean into indulgence, the overall project feels purposeful, offering a mix of thoughtful exploration and creative spontaneity. Critics have praised the album for capturing Mac’s ability to merge vulnerability with bold experimentation, cementing his reputation as a true innovator.
Balloonerism isn’t just another posthumous release—it’s a celebration of Mac Miller’s boundless creativity. It invites listeners to revisit the formative years of an artist who was always evolving, constantly searching for new ways to express himself. With its blend of playful experimentation, soulful production, and moments of heartfelt reflection, Balloonerism serves as both a time capsule and a timeless addition to Mac Miller’s discography.
